Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl Alcohol 99.5% - Disinfectant for Plant Care and Propagation

Overview

Isopropyl Alcohol (99.5%) is a high-purity disinfectant widely used in plant care for sanitizing tools, work surfaces, and propagation equipment. Its fast evaporation and strong antimicrobial action make it ideal for maintaining a clean, disease-free workspace.

Key Uses in Plant Care

Disinfecting cutting tools
Pruners, scalpels, and propagation blades can harbour bacteria, fungi, and viral contaminants. Wiping or dipping tools in Isopropyl Alcohol ensures a sterile surface and reduces the risk of transmitting pathogens between plants.

Sanitising work surfaces
Use it to clean propagation stations, potting benches, and any surfaces that come into contact with cuttings or seedlings.

Solvent for resin and sap residues
Isopropyl Alcohol dissolves plant sap, oils, and residues that water alone cannot remove, helping to keep tools clean and functional.

Using on plants (diluted to 70%; do not use it pure!)

A 70% solution is safer and more effective for direct plant contact (e.g., removing mealybugs or cleaning leaf surfaces). Always spot-test on a small area first!

To dilute 99.5% Isopropyl Alcohol to 70%, mix 7 parts Isopropyl Alcohol with 3 parts distilled water. This reduces the concentration from 99.5% to approximately 70%. Mix gently and store in a sealed, clearly labelled container.

Example: 70 ml alcohol + 30 ml distilled water → 100 ml of 70% solution

Safety Guidelines
Isopropyl Alcohol and its vapour are flammable. Keep away from heat sources, work in a ventilated area, and store securely. Wear protective gloves and avoid contact with eyes.
