Zeolite
Zeolite is a naturally occurring volcanic mineral formed when lava and ash interact with alkaline groundwater. Its unique crystalline structure creates countless microscopic pores, giving it remarkable absorption and ion-exchange properties.
- Weight & texture: Medium-weight, fine to granular particles with a slightly rough texture
- Porosity: Highly porous, capable of absorbing water, nutrients, and gases, then slowly releasing them back to the roots
- Best uses: Ideal as a soil additive to improve nutrient retention, buffer pH, and reduce the risk of over-fertilization or salt build-up
In plant mixes, zeolite acts as a natural “nutrient reservoir,” holding onto ammonium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and making them available to plants over time. It improves soil structure, balances moisture levels, and supports healthy microbial activity. Zeolite does not decompose and remains effective for many years, making it a valuable addition to mixes for aroids, orchids, succulents, and other tropical plants.
