Lava Rock
Lava rock is a natural volcanic stone formed when molten lava cools and solidifies into a dense, porous material. Its rough, irregular texture makes it both draining and stabilising in plant soil mixes.
- Weight & texture: Heavier and harder than pumice, with sharp-edged particles that provide structure
- Porosity: Moderately porous, allowing water to drain freely while preventing compaction
- Best uses: Excellent for mixes that need strong drainage and stability (aroids, succulents, orchids, bonsai). Especially useful to keep soil loose and roots well-aerated
The porous structure improves aeration, reduces the risk of root rot, and helps anchor plants securely in the substrate. While it absorbs less water than pumice, lava rock provides long-term drainage and airflow, ensuring a healthy root environment. Being inorganic, it does not decompose and maintains its structure for many years.
Particle size: ~2–8 mm
